Longley, Charles Thomas

   Archbishop.
   Longley had a distinguished career in the Church of England. After serving as headmaster of Harrow School, he was consecrated Bishop of Ripon in 1836, Bishop of Durham in 1856, Archbishop of York in 1860 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1862. He is remembered both as the Archbishop who proceeded against Bishop colenso and as the instigator of the Lambeth Conferences. These are regular assemblies of all the Bishops of the Anglican Communion, which take place every ten years.
